Dan Koeppel, author of Banana: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World, will be on the Edmonds Community College campus March 2. In the meantime, keep up with him on his blog bananabook.org. Read his article in The New York Times, Yes, We Will Have No Bananas. Listen to an interview with him on NPR, Bananas, A Storied Fruit with an Uncertain Future. Read an overview of the book on Google.

Three scholarships of $1,000 for spring quarter tuition are available to Edmonds Community College students who participate in the book read. Apply by 5 p.m., Mon., Nov. 30. Scholarship recipients will be announced Mon., Dec. 7.

To apply for the scholarship:
* Read Banana: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World. Copies are available at the library and for purchase at the College Store.
* Create and complete a project (it could be an essay, a visual presentation, performance, or Web site — be creative!) that addresses key themes of the book.
* Submit your application (both a hard copy to the Humanities and Social Sciences Division in Alderwood Hall 218 and an electronic copy to instructor Christopher Bell at cbell@edcc.edu). Your application should include:
--A 500 word or less description of the project and its connection to the book.
--A letter of recommendation from a faculty member that endorses your project.

I'm on a waiting list at the library for the book. Must be popular!

I will also pick this book up. I look forward to reading this, and also wonder if there will be any references to the United Fruit Company within the text. The effect of food commodities regionally and globally is staggering. Should be an interesting and educational read.
I visited the website/blog link, and found the entries to be very interesting. Thanks for the invite! Have a great day!

Welcome new members!

Edmonds CC Ning respectfully requests that we present our better nature to the online community and to each other — and may, in fact, insist on it!

The best stuff is yours! Student produced creative works: songs, videos, artwork, writing and pics get priority placement on the site. You're the star power here.

On the other hand: overly promotional material, advertising content, with no connection to our college community does not go here!
