College signs Partners for Veteran Supportive Campuses agreement

Edmonds Community College will sign the Partners for Veteran Supportive Campuses agreement today at 4:30 p.m. in Snohomish Hall at the college's regular Board of Trustees meeting with John Lee, Director of the Washington Department of Veterans Affairs and Mike Gregoire, First Gentlemen Office of the Governor. Edmonds CC’s Senior Associate Dean of Student Success and Retention, Peter Schmidt, helped create these statewide best practices to welcome veterans to campus.

The agreement was adopted and signed by representatives from nine state agencies, including Governor Gregoire, on September 10, 2009. Higher education institutions have been charged “…to implement best practices and policies designed to foster social support, acceptance, a welcoming environment, and a setting that meaningfully acknowledges the contributions of our veterans.”

Did you know? 300 vets receiving education benefits attend Edmonds CC, up from 145 student veterans at Edmonds CC two years ago.

New Web Site for Veterans — The American Council on Education has launched a new Web site, Today's GI Bill, to help veterans learn about the new education benefits available to them, the college selection process, and how to succeed in higher education. The site -- debuting just before Veterans Day -- was created with support from the Lumina Foundation for Education.

Congrats Edmonds CC for making the Military Friendly School List. My Dad, who was a long time Lynnwood resident would be proud of that accomplishment. He was a retired from the USAF as MSgt with 28 years active duty including a year in Vietnam. I served 8 years in the USAF as did my sister. I got out as an E5 SSgt and my sister as a Capt after being in the 1st USAF Academy Class that accepted women.

In August, Edmonds Community College was named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine. Twenty-six colleges and universities in Washington State made the list including Central Washington University and Washington State University.

Club Vet was mentioned in the Western Regional Newsletter of Student Veterans of America. "The college has become the first community college in Washington State to develop and present student Veterans with challenge coins. The idea of presenting Veterans with challenge coins was taken from the military custom created during WWI. In presenting these coins to student Veterans, Club Vet is attempting to show returning Veterans that their service is appreciated and that there are others like them on campus."

Club Vet,

Hey everyone. I look forward to seeing everyone on Friday at 8:00 PM at Johnny's (in Edmonds across the tracks from Bracket's Landing). I'm buying the first pitcher.

I'm glad to see and hear about your club activities! As some of you may know I teach anthropology here and am a veteran of the Persian Gulf War (Iowa National Guard). I wanted to extend an invitation to Club Vet members to earn a free fly fishing training and expedition with Northwest Fly Fishing Adventures.

This opportunity is a partnership between Stilly-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force and the Veterans Conservation Corps. Basically, the offer is that if you volunteer for five hours of habitat restoration or river cleanup at two projects with Stilly-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force and document those hours with the Veterans Conservation Corps then you can sign up for an "ecotherapy" fly fishing trip with Northwest Fly Fishing Adventures (you will need to purchase your own fishing license, boots, waders & appropriate clothing).

Visit http://stillysnofish.org to see projects. If you do plan to participate please let me know and I'll help you get signed up for documenting your hours through the Veterans Conservation Corps. I can also send you a document with all the fine print. ;-)
