Profile Information

What did you study at EdmondsCC?:
Music Theory. Jazz Workshop. Music History.
Why EdmondsCC?:
Because John Sanders, Music Dept. Chair, was very welcoming, and he impressed upon me the concept of accessibility of community colleges - open to everyone, even me.
Favorite class:
Music Theory
Best advice for new students:
Do. Be. Do. Be. Do.
Lasting memory from EdmondsCC?:
When Rigel made a potato of fifths for our sub, Ron Peters. And Nicole's laugh. And being a photographer for the 2008 jazz fest. And that time when the US Marines party band came and played. And remember that time, when Pearl Django came to play? OH! And remember all the times when Caleb and Matt would jam on 70's tunes in the Theory classroom before class?

It was all awesome. Two of the best years of my life.

College goal:
The gigantic mystery we call music - drink it all in.
Dream job:
Someday - Maybe? - Teaching the gigantic mystery we call music to other thirsty souls.

Community Colleges: Stewards of Arts Education for All

Now that I've completed Music Theory (a two-year course) along with the Jazz Workshop classes, I am even more excited about music than ever! Jazz Workshop empowered me with a much-needed sense of self-confidence, and helped me learn how to play well with others. Having also come away with a solid understanding of the foundations of music theory, I continue to write, composing some very special music indeed. In fact, I am utterly astonished by the fact that I can actually write music, and am deep… Continue

The Study of Music - Big Picture

Aside from studying Music for the sake of music, There are myriad other applications. For example, because of its powerful effect on emotions, music can often be a healing force in a world that sometimes offers nothing but pain. Music, Art and Drama are now officially recognized as being such a healing force that students can go on to study Music Therapy, Art Therapy, etc. And dramatic role-play has long been established as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool in the world of Psychology.

The Eternal Need for Artistic Expression

There is something about the arts that fill a need which computers cannot, It is timeless, almost immeasurable, and truly invaluable. From the beginning of time, man has always yearned to describe and shape his world in a way that goes well beyond Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs - food/shelter/clothing. Important, yes, but life is so much more than that. The fundamental human need to express oneself through art is burned i… Continue

The Arts - Can't Afford? Can't Afford to Lose!

Here we are, in a major economic downturn; there is simply no denying it.

Everyone is looking for ways to cut back. And one easy way, or so it seems, at the community college level, would be to cut back on apparent non-essentials such as Music, Visual Art, Drama. Stuff that doesn't seem to matter.

Except - it does matter, and it matters more than you may realize. For instance, to see a child singing is a beautiful thing, That is one idyllic image which perhaps comes to mind. Or a… Continue
